PERSCOM Soldier Management System is a web-based piece of software developed by Deschutes Design Group LLC to help organizations manage and track military-based personnel. Below, we will outline the start-to-finish process of purchasing, installing and running PERSCOM.
- Invision Community from Invision Power Services, Inc
- Web Hosting
- MySQL/MariaDB database
- PHP 7.2 or greater
Requirements 3 - 5 are only required if you purchase an On-premise Invision Community license. An Invision Community Cloud license does not require web hosting or a database.
If you have the above requirements, you are ready to install PERSCOM.
…is a forum-based community software developed by Invision Power Services, Inc. Deschutes Design Group LLC is not affiliated in any way with IPS. However, our PERSCOM software does install on top of Invision Community as an additional application for the software to use. You must have an active Invision Community license to install PERSCOM. PERSCOM does not run as a standalone product or on top of any other web-based software such as Wordpress, PHP Nuke, Drupal, Joomla, etc.
Cloud vs On-Premise: Invision Power Services offers two ways to purchase their product, as a cloud based installation or on-premise. While each offer has their pros and cons, you must decide your needs before determining the best approach for your use-case.
If you purchase the Cloud version, you do not need a web server as they will host the software for you. The Cloud version also comes with all Invision Community applications such as Forums, Pages, Downloads, Gallery, Commerce, Calendar and Blogs. Cloud requires a monthly subscription starting at $45/month.
If you choose the On-premise version, you will need a web server to host the software as you will be required to install and maintain the software yourself. While up front the software is more expensive, you will not have a monthly subscription to pay and if you plan to run the software for an extended period of time, On-premise will be cheaper in the long run. On-premise starts at a one-time fee of $200 (depending on the applications you choose).
You must own a web domain to be able to reach your web-based content. Your domain may be purchased from any domain registrar such as GoDaddy, BlueHost, HostGator or us, Deschutes Design Group LLC. Once your domain is purchased, you will be required to update the DNS settings to point your domain to your web server, either your Invision Community Cloud subscription or your On-premise installation. There are two typical ways of updating your DNS settings. One is to add an A record pointing to the IP Address of the server while the second is to update the namesevers. Our recommendation is to update the nameservers. Updating the nameservers will move your DNS hosting to your web server and away from your domain registrar. This is important as any future updates to your DNS will need to be made from the new location, not your domain registrar. While this step seems confusing, must hosting providers provide very detailed instructions on how to set up your DNS settings correctly.
The following sections are only needed if you have purchased an On-premise version of Invision Power Board and plan to host the software yourself.
You must have a web server to store your software on. Although this seems intuitive, it can be missed sometimes. You may use any web host of your choosing as long as they support PHP 7.2+. While this is a pretty common requirement, you must make sure these requirements are met to run PERSCOM. Once you have purchased your On-premise Invision Community software, download the software and upload it to your root publicly-accessible folder. Once the software is uploaded, and your domain is pointed to your webserver, proceed via your favorite browser to your website. An online installation screen will appear that will guide you through the rest of the installation process.
PERSCOM is installed and updated via the Invision Community marketplace. You must have an active Invision Community license to download applications from the marketplace. Installation and updates are as simple as the click of a button.
When you download and run PERSCOM for the first time, you will be running the software under a development license. This development license allows you to use the application without feature restriction however there is a quota on the amount of data that may be entered. This development license does not have a time restriction and you may use it for as long as you like. If you would like to add more data then is allowed via the development license, you will need to purchase a standard license. To purchase a standard PERSCOM license key, please visit this link. Once you have purchased a license key, you may enter it in the license key section of PERSCOM.
